It’s been the hottest summer on record for most of the south and Orange County is certainly included in that statement. Fingers crossed, it looks like the string of 100 plus temperatures are over.
So let’s take a look at the numbers with Meteorologist George Flickinger. He’s the award winning weatherman at WSET in Lynchburg, VA. George is an Orange native and a WOS grad.
“Orange’s all-time record high was broken or tied 4 times this year,” Flickinger said. “The record was 105 set August 10, 1962 until this year’s inferno.”
The hottest day and new record was August 27, 2023 when 110° was measured.
Flickinger added, “Consistent daily temperature data for Orange, Texas only goes back to 1986. Weather records exist before 1986, but they are mostly for rain. Temperature data has large gaps and missing data. But the 105 record in 1962 was recorded.”
Before this year, we hit 100 or better 54 times in 43 years (since 1980). This year we’ve crossed the century mark a whopping 36 times.
“Though the calendar says we’re moving into late September, we’ll likely have more days reaching the upper 90s into late month. No signs of a prolonged cool down yet. At least rain chances are more optimistic,” Flickinger said.
We did receive rain Wednesday and Thursday our chances are good. But it’s not expected to be enough for the county to cancel the Burn Ban. Orange County was placed under a Burn Ban on July 28.
