Motorcycle riders from Southeast Texas were invited to make a ride from Beaumont to Orange Saturday to promote Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and the 500 For Life club.
It was also to honor those that were lost to motorcycle accidents and the man who started the 500 for Life Club, Van Jordan, who passed away at his home last year.
The ride, escorted by law enforcement from Jefferson and Orange County, led the riders from Cowboy Harley to Columbanus Motor Sports in Orange.
J.W. Dalton, who now leads the group, spoke first and said people driving vehicles are not paying attention to the road and the number one reason is because they’re on their cell phones. Dalton also introduced speakers Mayor Larry Spears, Commissioner Chris Sowell, Jefferson Co. DA Keith Giblin, Attorney Michael Catt and OC Sheriff Lane Mooney who gave several statistics involving motorcycles. Mooney said most car vs. motorcycle accidents happen at intersections and the excuse is usually, “I didn’t see them.”
The group is pushing for stronger punishment for negligent auto drivers.
