The Astros have done it again! For the second time in franchise history, Astros pitchers have combined to no-hit the Yankees in New York. With today’s 3-0 win, the Astros become the only team to have no-hit the Yankees twice since 1950, once in the original Yankee Stadium and once in the new stadium.
Cristian Javier was dominant in his 7 innings pitched throwing a career-high 115 pitches. Hector Neris stayed strong despite some questionable calls in the 8th to set the table for Ryan Pressly in the 9th. Digging deep for redemption after a tough outing on Thursday, Pressly shut the Yankees down quickly to solidify their place in the history books. The no-hitter is the third combined, and fourteenth total no-hitter in franchise history.
Leading the offensive charge, JJ Matijevic blasted his second career hit and homerun off of Yankees pitcher, Gerrit Cole to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 7th. Jose Altuve did what he does best in the top of the 8th to give the Astros a 2-0 lead. Then Yuli Gurriel knocked in Kyle Tucker on a fly-ball single to center in the top of the 9th for the final run of the game.
The Astros look to close out the series Sunday with another win before heading to Queens to take on the Mets. They will return home next Thursday to take on the Yankees at home before welcoming the Angels and Royals to Minute Maid Park for the longest homestand so far this year.
