Saltwater and freshwater fishing reports from the TPWD this week.
Sabine Lake
GOOD. 73 degrees. Windy weather in the forecast, please check before heading out. High tides and winds pushed the fish into the marshes. A few redfish and trout are possible in the ICW with shrimp under a popping cork. Trout are stacking up in Pleasure Island along the North Levy and rock near two pikes when there is a northern wind. Flounder are also good near the two pikes rocks with gulp and swimbaits. Bessie Heights marsh holding limits of redfish. Keith Lake holding flounder on points and bayous biting on new penny gulp with a quarter inch jighead. Report by Captain Randy Foreman, Captain Randy’s Guide Service Sabine Lake.
Sam Rayburn
GOOD. Water stained; 67-72 degrees; 1.39 feet low. Bass are good with some shallow on beds using soft plastics, and some transitioning back out to points and ledges using Carolina rigs, jigs and crankbaits. Crappie are good shallow in the cypress trees, with some transitioning to main lake brush piles. Catfish are good spawning shallow in creek channels. Bluegill are showing up biting on minnows and small jigs. Report by Lynn Atkinson, Reel Um N Guide Service.
Toledo Bend
GOOD. Water stained; 64 degrees; 1.03 feet low. The water level is 171.1 with no generators running. The main lake is clear and 64 degrees, and the back feeder creeks are stained. The lake has come up a foot this week and the water is up in the buck brush and the freshly mowed yards. The bass will be feeding in the new vegetation along the banks where insects and bugs have washed into the lake. Use topwater imitations like popping frogs, buzz baits, spinnerbaits, wacky worms, lizards, and don’t forget them swim jigs and BIG swimbaits. Crappie are disappearing from the shallows and are heading back to the deeper water and brush piles. The shad are starting to spawn along the shores and wood structures, and the catfish spawn should not be far behind. The catfish are biting in 2-4 feet of water from first light to 8:30 a.m. using a slip cork rig with shrimp, live or frozen shad, chicken livers and Captain’s garlic (chicken flavored) weenies. The bluegill are beginning to move up shallow as the water warms to start building their beds for their first spawn. The air is starting to warm at night and summer is coming, so get the family and go fishing for those good times and wonderful memories! Remember to always keep your life jack on while on the water because the water is still cold, and hypothermia is dangerous. Captain’s tip, be aware, the deeper the water the bigger the swells. Don’t take a chance crossing any lake when high winds are forecasted. Play it safe on the water, always inform your loved ones or a friend of your expected return time to port or home. Good luck and tight lines! Report from Captain Steve (Scooby) Stubbe, Mudfish Adventures LLC, Mudfish Rod Shop, Kayak and Fishing Guide Service.
