2021 is now ending with some of the best Orange County news in recent years.
The New Gisela Houseman Medical Campus, including a 24/7 emergency room and hospital, is being developed by NexCore and Christus Southeast Texas Health System. The complex will be on the Eagle Point Development off Interstate 10 and Highway 62.
The projected opening date for the first phase will be in the spring of 2023. NexCore Group made the announcement Thursday. The company is based in Denver and is a nation healthcare developer.
Construction will be in two phases with the first phase set to break ground in January. Phase 1 will be a two-story, 55,000 square-foot medical office building. The first floor will leased to Christus for an emergency hospital with outpatient and diagnostic services. Other floors will be leased to independent physicians like local longtime physician Dr. Marty Rutledge, who has been the driving force to get a hospital here.
Orange County has not had a hospital since 2015 when Baptist Hospital on Strickland Drive closed the 122-bed in-patient hospital. The Baptist healthcare system then closed the emergency room in 2016.
Gisela Houseman has donated the land for the medical clinic and the City of Orange Economic Development Corporation has supported the development with grants for infrastructure including water and sewer service to the land. The city and Orange County have also helped with tax abatements for the project.
