
Food businesses across the county fared well in the latest health inspections. The lowest score was a 79 and went to the Popeye’s on Link Avenue in Orange. Most of the scores were in the 90s.
Inspector James Scales went to 16 restaurants and businesses during November. Three were pre-opening inspections with no scores. Two places, First Presbyterian Church Day School in Orange, and Red Apron Kitchen in Bridge City had perfect scores with no violations.
The new restaurants with pre-opening inspections are Big E’s Barbecue, 102 Green Avenue in Orange, Blackbeard’s on the Gulf 2, 2450 FM 1131 in Vidor, and Green’s Bluff Nutrition, 1502 Strickland Drive in Orange.
Other scores and demerits are:
Popeye’s Chicken, 1604 W. Link Avenue in Orange: 79. Inspector said restaurant needed “lots of cleaning and lots of repairs” throughout the store. He found the ice scoop on ice inside the drive-thru ice container. Dishes that had been cleaned had old foods on them. No employees had food handler certificates. The men’s restroom did not have hot water. Reach-in cooler was not keeping proper temperatures and inspector ordered immediate repair. Vents at Vent-a-Hood and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned. Floor grout was missing. Employee drink was on prep table with no lid and straw. Doors on equipment were not closing completely. Floors and walls needed to be cleaned. Current health inspection report was not posted. Handwashing signs were no posted at handwashing station. Equipment holding raw chicken and batter was dripping water onto the floor. Motor inside walk-in cooler ws dripping water onto products. Motor dripping onto raw chicken.
Ali’s Corner, 1410 Tenth Street in Orange: 88. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Rust was inside ice machine. Slush machine had mold. Store did not have hot water. Personal foods were stored improperly inside walk-in cooler. Drinks were stored on the floor. Gasket on reach-in freezer was damaged.
Gateway Travel Plaza, 22965 Interstate 10 in Vidor: 92. Mold was inside ice machine. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Foods were stored on floor. Trash and an old mobile home were stored outside in the parking lot. Permits and health inspection report were not posted.
Kwik Stop Valero, 2210 South Main Street in Vidor: 93. Reach-in cooler gaskets were damaged. Dates needed on products inside coolers. Three-compartment sink needed to be resealed at the bottom. Current health inspection not posted.
Honey Stop, 1012 West Park Avenue in Orange: 94. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Storage racks inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned. Mold was growing on walls in back storage room and near employee restroom. Current health report not posted.
Panthers Grill, 11845 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 95. White gravy was cooling on top of conter. No certified food manager on staff.
Subway, 10383 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 96. Both handwashing stations wee blocked with dishes and cookies. Walk-in freezer had ice build-up coming from motor inside. Inspector ordered immediate repairs.
Bobcat Nutrition, 5572 FM 408 in Orangefield: 97. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine.
Mauriceville Fuel Stop, 11845 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 98. Damaged and molded ceiling tiles were throughout building. Current health inspection report not posted.
Old Orange Cafe, 914 West Division in Orange: 98. Area around fryers needed to be cleaned. Ceiling tiles, walls, and air vents needed to be cleaned.
Chicken Express, 2250 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 99. Vents and Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned of grease build-up.
