As hurricane season began last month, homeowners in Orange were hooking up generator systems, according to city of Orange building permits.
During June, the city issued 10 permits to attach home electrical systems to generators, plus 13 more permits to run gas lines to generators. Two houses received permits for solar energy systems. In addition, two businesses were installing generators.
May was booming for commercial construction, but it slowed almost to a stop in June. Fruit County Investments got a permit for a remodeling of the building at 3730 16th Street to become a hearing resolution center. The Catholic Diocese of Beaumont took a permit for a $22,000 storage building at St. Mary Cemetery off Meeks Drive.
Residential repairs and remodelings also slowed. A total of 14 of those permits were issued with only two for storm repairs.
In addition, only one permit for a residential roofing was issued, along with permits for four residential storage buildings and one new residential swimming pool.
Golden Chick, a new fast-food restaurant at 1716 16th Street, got permits for a $10,000 irrigation system and a $4,500 fence.
Also in the commercial permit category, Community Church, 3400 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, had a permit for $28,500 in mechanical repairs.
Demolitions of dilapidated buildings around town continued. Permits for demolitions were issued for 2808 Bob Hall Road, 1307 Curtis Avenue, 333 Echo Loop, 1112 Eighth Street Apartment D, 1206 Godfrey, and 17 Bruce Lane.
