
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales has given the okay for several food businesses to open, including Golden Chick on 16th Street in Orange. The new fast food restaurant received City of Orange Economic Development grants to help build.
Other new businesses are The Snack Shack in Orangefield, Mission Grounds Koffiehouse in Vidor, Blackbeard’s on the Gulf in Vidor, Pirate Nutrition in Vidor, Champagne Charcuterie in Vidor, Setx Nutritition in Mauriceville, Do You Charcuterie in Vidor, Harold’s Kitchen in Orange, Joann’s Kitchen in Orange, and Sno Biz in Mauriceville.
The lowest score was a 79 for the Guadalajara Restaurant, 137 MacArthur Drive in Orange. Scales cited several problems including an employee eating a taco in the kitchen area, mold in the ice machine, and no hot water in restrooms.
The only two businesses earned perfect scores in Scales inspections for the last part of June went to the Piggin’ Out Concessions mobile food truck, and Fresh Prep in Bridge City.

Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant, 137 MacArthur Drive in Orange: 79. Foods inside coolers needed to be covered. Mold was inside ice machine. Ice scoop was on top of storage shelf. Certified food manager certificate had expired. Restrooms did not have hot water. Ceilings above food prep area were damaged. Several gnats were throughout restaurant. Products in coolers and freezers needed dates. Employee was eating a taco in the kitchen. Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Floors and ceilings needed to be cleaned. Back door needed to be resealed. Current food service permit was not posted. No employees had current food handler certificates.
La Mexicana Food Factory, 1601-A 16th Street in Orange: 88. Inspector closed restaurant until hot water problems were fixed. Raw chicken inside reach-in cooler was stored improperly. Dates were needed on products in coolers. Wiping cloths stored improperly. Bag of rice was stored on floor. Lights needed to be replaced in back kitchen.
Bayon Donuts, 710 North Main Street in Vidor: 89. Sausage kolache not at safe temperature. No record of time on holding sausage kolaches at room temperature. Dates needed on products in coolers. Wiping cloths stored on prep tables. Same pan liner used multiple times to back kolaches. Back storage room needed to be cleaned.
LaCantina Mexican Grill, 2709 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 89. Inspector found several dead and live roaches. Cooked onions were sitting on prep table at improper temperatures. Chemical stored on top of container of dry goods. Dates were needed on products in coolers and freezers. Sign needed at handwashing station. Floor grout was missing.
M&S Grocery, 10876 FM 1130 in Orange: 90. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Mold was inside ice machine and on drink dispensers. Store name and address needed on bags of ice being sold. Storage shelves inside coolers needed to be cleaned. Floor tiles damaged.
Fuel Point, 3118 Edgar Brown Drive in West Orange: 90. Inspector pulled expired foods from shelves. Mold was inside slushy machines. Ice scoop stored on crate. Sandwiches were out of date inside reach-in freezer. Needed to be disposed. Drinks stored on floors. Floors inside walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old milk.
On the Road, 8850 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 90. Peeled garlic was not at safe temperatures. Cooling unit for creamers was turned off while product was still being sold. Dates needed on products in coolers. Soap and paper towels needed at handwashing stations. Products needed to be stored off of floor and inside business.
Smart Stop Food Mart, 811 Strickland Drive in Orange: 90. Pre-packaged sandwiches were not at safe temperatures. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Cooler holding pre-packaged sandwiches was not keeping safe temperatures and needed repairs. Drinks were store on the floor. Health inspection report was not posted.
Dollar General, 9692 FM 105 in Orangefield: 91. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans from shelves. Drinks were stored on the sales floor. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Current health inspection report was not posted.
Family Dollar, 115 West Bolivar Street in Vidor: 92. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans from shelves. Several dead roaches were in back storage rooms. Current food service permit and current health inspection report was not posted.
Mr. Burger and Seafood, 1011 W. Park Avenue in Orange: 93. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Dishes and soap were stored inside handwashing station. Hair restraints were needed. Employee had improper jewelry. Wiping cloths were stored on top of counters. Certified food manager certificates and current health inspection report were not posted.
Dairy Queen, 2426 16th Street in Orange: 94. Foods inside reach-in freezer needed to be covered. Ice build-p inside walk-in freezer motor and inside cake reach-in freezer. Employee foods stored improperly inside walk-in cooler.
Big Daddy’s Food Truck, 1600 Strickland Drive in Orange: 95. Dates needed on products inside coolers. Enclosure needed on outside barbecue pit. Hair restraints needed.
Funnel’d, 1804 16th Street in Orange: 96. Sanitizer needed inside unit. Floors needed to be cleaned.
I-Ten West Diner, 2650 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 96. Sausage was not at proper temperatures. Employees had improper jewelry.
Dollar General, 11990 FM 1442 in Orange: 99. Lots of trash on ground outside dumpster area.
Burger King, 2508 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 94. Inspector found lots of dead insects at drive-thru area. Employee had on improper jewelry. Vent-a-Hood area, along with floors throughout kitchen needed to be cleaned. Walk-in cooler and freezer needed to be cleaned of old foods. Paper towels were needed in men’s restroom. Current health inspection report was not posted.
