LCM Bass Team fishing partners Justin James and Gavin Cooper love to fish. And they realize how many opportunities they’ve had because of the sport of fishing. So they wanted to give back.
“We’ve fished on other lakes and we would see collection stations for fishing line and we realized we didn’t have one,” said James.
When disposed of improperly monofilament can be hazardous to marine life and very costly when caught up in boat propellers. Even when put in the trash monofilament can end up harming wildlife at landfills.
So James and Cooper worked with BOAT U.S. who has a recycling program. They give all of the line to Berkley and they recycle it. BOAT U.S. showed them how to build the receptacle and gave them labels to properly mark the station.
The station consists of a PVC tube large enough that you can reach in and discard monofilament line that you may have in your boat after fishing, or maybe you hooked on to some that was thrown away incorrectly. Now the Orange Boat Ramp has a designated spot near the ramp.
The LCM students got permission from the city to put up the cannister to complete their project and they’re hoping to do a few more around the area.
It’s been a busy year for the duo. They won three tournaments this year and will be fishing in the Bassmaster High School Championship on Chickamauga Lake in Dayton, Tenn. July 29-31. Good luck fellas!
