The season came to an end for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs Friday with a 28-14 loss to Carthage in the 3A Division I Quarterfinal in Beaumont. Carthage took advantage of three first half turnovers to take a 20-0 lead at the half. But Thomarcus Fontenot changed that with a 98 yd. kickoff return to open the third quarter. WOS got the ball right back after the Bulldogs fumbled the kickoff but they gave it right back to them when a Dillon Cole pass was intercepted. Chase Rutledge came into the game for Cole and lead the Mustangs to their first offensive TD. Jack Dallas added the PAT to make it 20-14. WOS got the ball at their own 7 at the beginning of the fourth and put together a 13 play drive and had the ball at the 12 when Rutledge threw an interception in the endzone. Carthage took over at the 20 and the Mustangs looked to get the ball back after putting the Bulldogs in a 4th and 12 call from their own 17. Carthage Coach Scott Suratt made the gutsiest call of the night by going for it and QB Blake Bogenschutz ran 17 yards for the first. That kickstarted a 16 play, 93 yd drive that also took 8 minutes off the clock. They capped it with a TD and 2 point conversion for a 28-14 lead. WOS would commit their sixth turnover of the game as it came to a close, giving the Bulldogs the two touchdown victory.

The former Anderson Elementary School is ready to be turned into offices for the West Orange-Cove school administration. The move is expected to come in December after a slight delay in the renovation of the 1981 building. Contractors putting a new concrete parking lot on the Park Avenue side of the block had extra work to do. They uncovered concrete and rebar along with from a previous Anderson School. Was it the foundation of the first or the second Anderson school? The one standing now is the third Anderson, though it no longer has the name ‘Elementary School’ behind the title. Anderson Elementary was the first ‘suburban’ school for the city of Orange. The original town grew along the crescent of the Sabine River in what is now downtown or the southern side near the Port of Orange and the Cove neighborhood.
Friday night Derreashia Breaux-Daughtery was crowned homecoming queen at West Orange-Stark High School. The Mustangs beat Hardin-Jefferson 46-6.
Students at West Orange-Stark high school and middle school will be getting bus service home this year when they participate in after-school activities like sports and academic activities. The service will be offered only Mondays through Thursdays. The school board in a special meeting Monday night, Aug. 5 had a split vote for that decision. The board had spent nearly three hours during the past two weeks discussing the proposal. Then last night before a standing-room crowd, board members had almost two hours of discussion. The vote came after a strange development. The director of the transportation department, who oversees buses and bus drivers, said he needed to ask the school district’s attorney a question. Board President Pete Amy suddenly called a closed-door executive session for the board to meet with the lawyer. After coming out of the session, Board member Tony Dallas made a motion to delay the bus decision because of what he learned in the closed session. No one seconded the motion. Amy, who has argued the district can’t afford the bus service, moved not to offer the service. His motion, too, had no second. Board members Bryan ‘Chop’ Thomas Mohammed and Andrew Hayes made and seconded the motion to provide the four day transportation to a vote. Members Mary Ann Kirksey, Hardy O’Neal, Eric Mitchell, Mohammed and Hayes all voted for the service. Dallas after the meeting said he supports the bus transportation but wanted to delay the decision a week. Superintendent James Colbert and Finance Director Melinda James presented the prices on different options for service. The after-school bus service was provided for 30 years to participants in boy sports. The board in December 2008 voted to eliminate the service because of the costs. Amy was a member of that board. The reinstated service will be for boys and girls and all after-school activities including tutorials. Several board members are concerned about children walking home late at night after sporting events but the costs would be about $121,125 a year. The four-day-a-week after-school service will cost about $66,000 a year. The district already started a new budget. The option for paying for the service is for the costs to be absorbed by not hiring a new maintenance employee that was budgeted, and cutting back on all supplies 5 percent. The board will vote on the budget changes at a future meeting.
The West Orange Stark Mustangs had another banner season in 2012 going 13 and 1 before being eliminated in the regional finals by eventual state champion Navasota. Head Coach Cornel Thompson evaluated last season for the Mustangs. “We had a number of people that were returning especially on the defensive side of the ball and some on the offensive side of the ball with experience,” Thompson said. “It was a great run.” One advantage of advancing that far in the playoffs, Coach Thompson admitted, is it gave the coaches at West Orange Stark a chance to look at younger Mustangs brought up to the varsity. “Those extra days of workouts especially for your young kids, that looms huge,” Thompson explained. “We got four extra weeks of work with some of the young kids out here, so you start looking off of those workouts who may be your players for the next year that would be coming back and maybe what positions they would be in,” Thompson concluded.
