The steel mill in Vidor is planning a $40 million expansion that will create up to 65 permanent jobs. Orange County has started the process to give a tax abatement to Optimus Steel at 340 Old Highway 90.
Optimus was previously owned by Gerdau. The company is planning the expansion for a new steel wire product line.
Orange County Commissioners Court this week created a reinvestment zone for the location. That is the first action needed before a tax abatement can be granted.
On Thursday, the county set meetings for the abatement. The court will have a workshop meeting at 10 a.m. November 24 to discuss tax abatement guidelines. Then on December 22 at 2 p.m., the court will meet for a public hearing and possible action to give the tax abatement to Optimus.
