
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales in October found school cafeterias were in top shape. He went to 10 schools and gave all perfect scores of 100.
The inspector had a total of 20 inspections. Besides the schools, he also made five pre-opening inspections with no scores. The lowest score was a 79 and went to Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant in Bridge City. Demerits included cooked shrimp and other foods at unsafe temperatures.
The perfect scores went to Vidor Junior High, Oak Forest Elementary, Pine Forest Elementary, West Orange-Stark Middle School, North Early Learning Center, Orangefield Elementary, Bridge City Middle School, Bridge City Intermediate, Orangefield Intermediate, and Orangefield High.
Pre-opening inspections were Sugar Shack Club and Sports in Orange, Grandma’s Country Cooking in Bridge City, Leslie’s Place Diner in Bridge City, Cajun Ventures in Bridge City, and The Lunch Box in Orangefield.
Other scores and demerits are:
Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant, 1085 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 79. Cooked beans, rice, and shrimp were cooling improperly on shelves. Cheese enchiladas, cooked shrimp, and cooked fajita beef were at improper temperatres. Ice scoop was on top of machine. Bare hands (no gloves) were used with prepared foods. Hot water was 12 degrees too cool. Dates were needed on products. Employee was licking food off fingers. Wiping cloths were on the prep table. Vent-a-Hood and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned. Area outside back door needed to be cleaned of broken and unused equipment. Current food service permit, certified food manager certificates, and current health inspection report needed to be posted in front.
Star Stop, 1402 16th Street in Orange: 85. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves, some back to 2018. Slight mold was on drink dispensers, store name and address were needed on all bags of ice being sold. Spider webs were above the ice machine. Chemicals were stored improperly above paper plates on sales floor. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler. Lights were out in the storage room. Current health inspection certificate was not posted in front.
Star Stop In and Out, 20854 Interstate 10 in Vidor: 88. Inspector found several out-of-date containers of milk. Ice scoop was on top of ice machine. Mold was inside the ice machine. Dates were needed on products, including sandwiches, inside coolers. Lots of gnats were throughout store. Drinks were stored ont the flood inside the walk-in cooler. Floors inside the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods. Current food service permit and current helath inspection report were not posted in front.
Popeye’s Chicken, 952 North Main Street in Vidor: 90. Scoop used for flour was improperly stored. Ice and foods were inside the handwashing station. Baseboards and walls were broken. An employee was wearing a nose righ. Outsideof equipment, storage shelves, floors and Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Inspector recommended lots of general cleaning and said he would make follow-up visits.
Starbucks Coffee, 3126 16th Street in Orange: 98. Inside of storage shelves needed to be cleaned. Floors needed to be cleaned.
