Jay Dewey (Rodriguez) Rodrick, age 97, of Deweyville, Texas, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A Memorial Service to honor Jay’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at Dorman Funeral Home in Orange, Texas, with Brother John Fortenberry officiating the services.
Jay was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on Friday, February 2, 1923, to parents, Callie O. (Wiley) and Florien Rodriguez. He was a longtime resident of Deweyville, Texas where he was known and love by many. Jay was a family man who enjoyed spending quality time with them every chance that he got. He met the love of his life when he came to know, Scharlene (Williamson). The couple shared 38 blissful years of marriage and made a lifetime of memories together with their families. He also enjoyed relaxing with his dog, Gabby, who was his very best bud, tending to his gardens and going deer hunting. Over time, he was able to enjoy taking some of his grandchildren hunting with him and teaching them what he knew. He was a very hard worker and business owner, also instilling that trait into his children and grandchildren. He made his living building and running, “Jay’s”; his very own Bar & Night Club, from 1947 until 1997. He could have literally written a book about the things he heard and witnessed throughout those years. Loving to tell his stories about “the good ole days and the days of honkey tonk”, past memories from Jay’s would often come into conversation. Jay was also a proud United States Navy Veteran who went and stood on the front lines for our Country during World War II. In college at the time, with aspirations of attending Medical School and one day becoming at Doctor, Jay traded in his textbooks for combat boots and a rifle to go fight for our Freedom.
Jay was a loving husband, son, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, uncle and wonderful friend, who will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Scharlene Rodrick; children, Gloria Brown and husband Pat, Lainey Cooper and husband Lonnie, Stephen Rodrick and wife Samantha, Leilani Strickland and husband Shane, Anita Rodrick, as well as, Jarrett Rodrick and wife Stacey; 18 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren and 8 Great-Great Grandchildren.
Jay is preceded in death by his parents, Callie Wiley and Florien Rodriguez; one brother; three sisters; Grandson, Jeremiah Spell; Granddaughter, Lenora “Nonnie” Bean, as well as, Great Grandchildren, Trinity Hantz, Mason Slone and Alyvia Hebert.
