Steven Wynne Toal passed away September 19, 2020, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. He marked his 65th birthday the day before.
Steve was a native of Orange, born in 1955 to George Amar Toal Sr. and Betty Toal. He grew up on the waterways and at Sunset Grove Country Club. Boating, fishing, and golfing were his favorite activities and he was once known for his fast cigarette boat with the 454 engine.
He was a longtime member of the Orange Boat Club and served as commodore. Every year, he played golf with the “Stark High Soreheads,” a group of buddies from his youth who gathered for a weekend of golf and tales.
In addition, he was a Harley Davidson biker and made a number of trips to different rallies, including Sturgis, South Dakota.
Steve attended First Baptist Church as a child and went through the Orange school district. After attending Stark High School, he moved with his mother to Bridge City, where he graduated in 1974.
Steve joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for four years. He completed two West Pacific tours as a signal man on the USS Enterprise, a nuclear aircraft carrier. He also served a West Pacific tour on the USS Ranger, a conventional aircraft carrier.
After he returned to Orange, he started work at the Allied Chemical plant on Chemical Row. He worked there for a number of years as the plant had new owners and names.
Steve was a batchelor who became a father to two young men who are half brothers. He gave them a place to live, taught them life lessons, and made sure they graduated from high school. He proudly introduced them to his friends and his family as his sons.
Today, Michael Peveto and Jared Block say Steve taught them to make good decisions. They are now married with wives and children of their own.
Steve was the favorite uncle to his brother George’s children, Rebecca and Jason. He traveled with George’s family on annual trips to Destin, Florida. He became a great-uncle when Rebecca had daughters Sophia, age 9, and Salma, age 5. As great-uncle, he always had gifts for the little ones during holidays.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Toal Massey; brother and sister-in-law, George and Nevella Toal of Orange; niece Rebecca Toal Carmack and husband, Dr. Dave Carmack, of Marble Falls; and nephew Jason Toal and wife, Amber, of College Station.
Steve requested to be cremated. A memorial service for him will be scheduled during Thanksgiving weekend.
