Last football season can be described as a very successful one for Deweyville. The Pirates finished the year with a winning record and made the playoffs.
Coach Brandon Prouse in his fourth year at Deweyville returns a number of Pirates on offense. At guard and tackle respectfully are Nathan Parker a junior and Conner Salter a sophomore. This duo is expected to create some holes for the Pirates’ runners.
Returning for Deweyville is senior fullback Cade Watson, the coach expects great things out of him. At halfback will be junior Ryan Bland who has started the last two seasons. Prouse said, “We’re really excited about having both of those guys back there.”
Over the summer James Menard transferred to the Deweyville program from Community Christian. Menard appears to be the top candidate to become the quarterback for the Pirates.
Tight end Jordan Brown may be shifted to the backfield to use his excellent blocking technique as a blocking back. Ethan Willett has joined the Deweyville varsity and will add depth to the Pirates’ backfield.
At split end is senior Justin Brister. Prouse is looking to fill two positions at split tackle and split guard. Freshman Roman Spears and sophomore William Kirkwood are the favorites to be the starters there.
During two-a-days the Pirates’ offense is exceeding expectations. “Right now, the offense is really ahead of pace in the installation of the plays which is a good thing,” Prouse assured.
In Class 2-A, Coach Prouse reminded that most of the same names compose the defensive unit for Deweyville. William Kirkwood will be the leader on defense at linebacker.
James Menard at free safety should lead the secondary for the Pirates. Cade Watson will be an outside linebacker and does a good job of flying around and securing tackles.
Ryan Bland will anchor the line at defensive end. At the other defensive end will be Nathan Parker. Jordan Brown is the noseguard.
Most of the Pirates that start on offense will turn around and play defense. Prouse analyzed, “That’s what we have to do to compete around here, we’ve got to put the best eleven on the field.”
The big concern for Coach Prouse is depth. Deweyville has a strong first eleven which will make the Pirates competitive, but with the COVID pandemic and just the normal injuries that come with a football season Prouse is trying to find kids that can relieve the starters for three or four plays without turning the ball over on offense or surrendering a touchdown on defense.
Deweyville went down in classification after last season which has Prouse and the Pirates excited about this year. It gives the Pirates a chance to compete for a district title and a gold championship ball which is always a goal, but is now more achievable.
In the previous classification the Pirates were fighting their district opponents with a very short stick according to Prouse. Now their stick has gotten even with everybody else’s stick in their district.
The Pirates should be right in the mix of the playoff teams in their new district. By getting a first or second place finish in their district, the Pirates will earn a higher seed which will give them a lesser opponent in the first round of the playoffs and could get them a playoff win which in history they have never had at Deweyville. “The kids have worked hard, they’re excited about it, you can tell that they know now they have a chance to really play for something, and that’s helped at practice they’ve been more focused a little more coachable,” Prouse concluded.
