Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt announced his resignation this week effective June 30. He will be replaced by Lane Mooney who won the sheriff’s election during the Republican Primary and does not face an opponent in the general election.
Mooney has been serving as the Constable of Precinct 4 and will be sworn in as the sheriff on June 30 at midnight. Mooney said he will announce the deputies to fill the captain positions in the Sheriff’s Office that night.
One position Mooney did reveal is that his longtime friend Richard Howard will serve as his chief deputy. Mooney and Howard have known each other since grade school. Howard currently serves as the captain of the Patrol Division in the Sheriff’s Office.
The soon to be sheriff is excited about taking the position and serving the citizens of the county. “It’s going to be a great opportunity for all of us, we’re all enthusiastic over this and we’re ready to go. Our main concern is we’re going to take care of the people of Orange County,” Mooney promised.
