After tremendous success in his first season as the girls basketball coach at West Orange-Stark, D.J. Wilson has been moved over by Athletic Director Cornel Thompson to coach the Mustang boys basketball team.
Wilson takes over for Bill Barstow who left the school after two seasons.
Wilson took WOS to the playoffs as they advanced to the third round of the playoffs, losing to state ranked Hardin-Jefferson. That included a first round four vs. one seed win over Livingston.
“It’s a dream job for me,” he said. “To come back home after so many years and now I get to coach some of the best athletes in the area, I couldn’t be happier for the opportunity.”
Wilson credits his 22 years in the Marine Corps, earning an E-9 rank, and a love of the game, as keys to his success with the girls program.
“I learned a lot about leadership and team building,” he said. “And as the girls got to experience more of it, the better we got and learning what we wanted to do on the court became easier for them. Don’t get me wrong we played to our strengths, but it was great to watch them grow and they have some key players coming back next year so I think they’ll do fine.”
Thompson has to fill Wilson’s position as well as someone to coach volleyball. “We’re close to finalizing those positions,” he said.
