People working on the design for Orange County’s 26-miles of levees and seawalls have begun contacting some property owners. Orange County Judge said the designers have been getting permission to take soil samples and cores.
The $1.9 billion flood-protection system will include pumps at some bayous that will help flooded waterways drain. Gothia said State Representative Dade Phelan helped get the state to pay for Orange County’s share of the “coastal spine.”
Orange County Commissioners Court has two items involving the levee system for Tuesday’s meeting at 2 p.m. The items involve the county and the Orange County Drainage District working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Texas General Land Office. The meeting is still under restrictions of having a maximum of 10 people present. It will be broadcast on the Orange County Emergency Management’s Facebook page.
A contract for the design of the Orange was awarded earlier this year.
Gothia said on KOGT’s Morning Show Monday that the project will bring construction jobs to the area. The Orange County segment of the coastal spine has been in the works for several years.
The judge said this area is important to protect because of the oil industry and products that are produced here.
