Dr. James Jones is hanging up his stethoscope after 55 years of being a physician. Tuesday was his last day at his office on Western Avenue.
Jones announced his retirement to his patients before Christmas. Dr. Manuel Hababag is taking over Jones’s practice and Physician Assistant Jennifer Manuel will continue to work at the Western Avenue office.
A reception honoring the doctor will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, January 9, at his office, 2607 Western Avenue.
Dr. Jones estimates he delivered 3,000 babies during his more than 50 years in Orange County. He was the first in the county to be a board certified family physician.
He moved to Orange during World War II with his parents, J.B. and Inez Jones, when he was 4 years old. He has said he always wanted to be a doctor.
After graduating from Bridge City High School, he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at Lamar University and then went to the University of Texas Medical Branch for medical school. He became a doctor in 1965 and served an internship at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
Then he came home to open an office in 1968. He’s been here ever since, serving not only his patients, but the medical community.
“I have greatly valued our relationship and thank you for your loyalty and friendship over the years,” he wrote to his patients. He closed with a Bible verse: “I thank m god upon every remembrance of you.” Phillippians 1:3
