Not totally unexpected County Judge Carl Thibodeaux resigned his position Tuesday as the chief administrator for the county during the meeting of the Commissioners Court. Thibodeaux had been appointed County Judge in March by the Commissioners to replace Dean Crooks who had previously resigned as the county judge of Orange County. His last meeting will be July 10.
As the County Judge Pro-Tem for the Court, Commissioner John Gothia will handle the responsibilities of the County Judge. Gothia will serve in that capacity until an appointment of a replacement as County Judge is made by the Commissioners.
After serving 20 years as the County Judge from 1995 to 2014, Thibodeaux agreed to resume his position on an interim basis. At the time Thibodeaux stated he probably would not seek re-election to a full-term and that the position would only be temporary.
The Commissioners unanimously appointed Thibodeaux as County Judge on March 27. The appointment occurred two weeks after then County Judge Dean Crooks surprised many by resigning his position during a Commissioners Court meeting.
During his resignation announcement on March 13, Crooks singled out his disagreement with the four Commissioners on the handling of the county’s policy for tax abatements as the reason. Crooks’ resignation was accepted by the Commissioners at their next meeting on March 19. Gothia handled the responsibilities of the County Judge until Thibodeaux was appointed.
