In a year that saw her rewrite some records in North Texas women’s golf program history, Lauren Cox is adding another feather to her cap with one year of eligibility still remaining.
The junior from Orange, Texas, was named first-team All-Conference USA on Tuesday, the league announced, and became the first women’s golfer at UNT to earn first-team honors since the school joined Conference USA.
Cox, who was a second-team selection last year, upped her game to a new level this year and is well on her way to setting a new program record for lowest single-season scoring average with a 73.46 average, more than a full stroke lower than the previous best mark (74.60), set by Randi Gauthier in 2002-03. Cox also tied a 30-year-old program record for low round (66) on April 2 at The Bruzzy Invitational in Argyle.
“This honor for Lauren is very much deserved,” UNT coach Michael Akers said. “She has had a great year from start until now. Our competition schedule is extremely difficult, and she has excelled against the best. If you look closely at the women’s golf side of C-USA, you will see six teams ranked inside the top 100. This is a solid golf conference, so makes first team even more special.”
In her nine tournaments this year, Cox has seven top-20 finishes, including three in the top 10 after she tied for sixth at the C-USA tournament last week. Her only two finishes not in the top 20 were T-26th and T-28th. She has nine rounds under par this year and four sub-70 rounds.
Next up for Cox is awaiting a possible bid to the NCAA tournament. Those will be announced Wednesday in the NCAA selection show at 4:30 p.m.
