The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears continue to show they are a team that needs watching locally and possibly later in Austin. The Lady Bears got terrific pitching to go with two homeruns to defeat the Bridge City Lady Cardinals 8-0 Tuesday night at the Lady Bears Softball Field.
Brianna Frenzel was the star of the night. The LC-M senior pitched a one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts. Brianna had as good a night with the bat as she did in the circle going three for four with a homerun and a double.
The Lady Bears scored two runs in the second taking advantage of control issues for Bridge City starter Austyn Daniels. Renna Toomey and Olivia Leavings both walked to start the inning.
Morgan Weaver laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Toomey rounded third after the out at first base, and when the Lady Cardinals tried to trap her off the base a bad throw allowed her to come home with the first run while pinch runner Malajah Roberts scampered to third.
With two outs Madeline Stephenson hit a sinking liner to center that just fell in for a single. Roberts trotted home to make it 2-0 for the Lady Bears.
The Frenzel sisters got two more runs for LC-M in the third. Bailey Frenzel led off with a walk. She trotted home in front of her sister Brianna who smashed the ball over the centerfield fence making the score 4-0 in favor of the Lady Bears.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville loaded the bases after adding another run. The Lady Cardinals’ Caitlain Denison saved at least two runs by snaring a bullet hit by Joanna Henry and touching third for an unassisted double play to end the inning.
The bench for Little Cypress-Mauriceville contributed a run in the fifth to increase the lead to 6-0. Pinch hits by Payton Smith and Shelby Smith setup Henry to drive in a run with her second hit of the game.
The final two runs for the Lady Bears were done on a literal dinger by Toomey. With pinch runner Roberts at first running for Brianna who had singled, Toomey stroked a drive to left that easily cleared the fence and may very well have left a dent on the fender of one the cars parked on Bear Path.
Bridge City’s Natilee Reed broke up Frenzel’s bid for a no-hitter leading off the seventh inning with a line drive that landed about three feet fair down the left field line. A walk to Denison gave the Lady Cardinals two base runners in the same inning for the only time in the game. Frenzel got her final strikeout and then a fly to left to end the ball game and seal the victory for LC-M.
The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears resume district action on Friday at West Orange-Stark against the Lady Mustangs. The Lady Cardinals play the Lumberton Lady Raiders Friday in Bridge City.
