The Vidor Lady Pirates had another good season last year. The Lady Pirates made the playoffs and return eight girls from that team.
Coach Michael Trahan will be counting on his four seniors to lead the Lady Pirates. Brianna Bushelle returns at shortstop for Vidor. At third base is another returning senior Calissa Weber. In center Gabrielle “Gabbie” LeGlue will patrol the outfield for the Lady Pirates. Juliann Anderson will be playing flex and will see time all over the field according to Trahan.
There are some younger ladies Trahan will use this season on the Vidor varsity. Sophomore Skyler Head will probably bat leadoff for the Lady Pirates while starting in left field and playing a little catcher. Junior Bailey Rowe will be the starting pitcher at Vidor. Starting since she was a freshman is junior Kiley Brown in the infield.
The primary catcher will be Khloie Andrus a sophomore. Claire Villadsen is another sophomore that will see plenty of playing time. Trahan advised, “We’ve got some freshman that are coming up that are going to make their way into the lineup.”
Vidor should be able to put some runs on the board. Coach Trahan provided the Lady Pirates’ lineup that opponents will face. At the top of the order will be Head who is a good slap hitter from the left side with speed and should get on base a lot. Another very good left-handed hitter is Rowe in the three hole. Big things are also expected from Brown. The rest of the lineup has plenty of experience. “They all know what to expect, and they should improve their game on that end,” Trahan believes.
Pitching is always important in softball. Trahan said he will have two pitchers that will battle opposing hitters. Rowe will be the number one in the circle. She is not a power pitcher, but she is good at locating her variety of pitches. A freshman Ashlee Malagarie should contribute for Vidor. She saw her first varsity action in a scrimmage against Little Cypress-Mauriceville and handled the pressure well against a very good team. Trahan observed, “I think she’s going to continue to grow and be good for us.”
Are the playoffs in store for the Lady Pirates again this season? The expectations for Coach Trahan are not changing. The district has gotten tougher with the addition of Barbers Hill and is now one of the toughest in the state. “We wouldn’t have it any other way and our scrimmages and pre-district get us ready for that. We expect to make the playoffs,” Trahan concluded.
