The math shows the Orangefield Bobcats have been eliminated from going to the playoffs. The Bobcats’ loss and a come from behind win for Hardin last week took away any chance for the post season at Orangefield.
Coach Josh Smalley advised there was an injury last week for Orangefield. Defensive lineman Colby Gonzales had a concussion in the game and will miss the contest this week.
Despite the loss the coach was pleased with the effort by the Bobcats against a very good Woodville team. “As far as getting back to the way we play the game tough, physical, aggressive that kind of stuff it showed back up last Friday,” Smalley praised.
The Bobcats will play the Warren Warriors this Friday. Smalley evaluated the multiple offense of the Warriors. They use a little Spread and a little I-Formation while emphasizing the run over the pass. The Warren offense is deceiving because the Warriors do move the football, but have had difficult scoring points averaging only five points a game in district. Smalley advised, “We’ve got to prepare well against a well-coached Warren team and hopefully give the same effort we gave last week against Woodville and see what happens.”
The leading ball carrier for Warren is Devon Hadnot. He has 544 yards rushing including five touchdowns. Hadnot does have the speed to break a long one. The Warriors do not throw the ball much. Quarterback Brody Brockman has completed forty percent of his passes most of them Ryan Sharp.
Like many teams against Orangefield, Warren will most likely gear its defense to stop the Bobcats’ running game according to Coach Smalley. The Warriors use multiple fronts on defense. The have been in a four-man front and with a five-man front. Friday night Warren is expected to put nine Warriors in the box with the hope of slowing down the Orangefield offense.
Linebackers Luke Callaway, Collin Stanley, and Bryce Herrington run to the ball well. In the secondary the Warriors play a lot of man-to-man which has Smalley hoping the Bobcats might be able to take advantage of with some passes. Smalley observed, “They’re aggressive, they do get after you, they’ve caused some turnovers, they’re well coached, and they play hard.”
Warren comes into the game winless on the season. Smalley is hoping to honor the graduating Bobcats with a win on Senior Night, and promises Orangefield will take nothing for granted come Friday night. “The goal of the playoffs is out of the question, but we can still play hard, we can still give a good effort, we can still represent our community, our school, and our program well with our effort and the way we play. We still play with character, integrity, and all that stuff doesn’t matter what’s on the line we can do that because it’s the right thing to do, and I think we will,” Smalley concluded.
