The Bridge City Cardinals had their best offensive performance of the season, but lost to Huffman last week. Coach Allen DeShazo said there were no Cardinals injured in the Huffman game.
DeShazo praised the Cardinals, and their offensive effort against Huffman. Bridge City tried some new wrinkles on offense which helped the Cardinals control the ball. They ran for over 200 yards and threw for 157. “We still turned it over a few times, but other than that I’m really proud of their effort,” Coach DeShazo added.
Like Huffman was last week another preseason district favorite is on the schedule for Bridge City this Friday as the Cardinals play the Lumberton Raiders. DeShazo reviewed the Raiders’ offense. They are a smash-mouth run right at you team. Lumberton looks like a Slot-T team lined up in the Shotgun with which the Cardinals are familiar. DeShazo predicted, “They’re just real physical, so we’re expecting a physical game.”
With the run being the key to their offense the Raiders have several backs to carry the ball. Justin Conway and Braden Carter are two of them, but the coach insisted all of them are good. Lumberton likes to run behind its big tight end Gabe Sonnier.
Lumberton is just as physical on defense as it is on offense according to Coach DeShazo. The Raiders use an even man front just like Huffman did. They are very good at stopping the run. Bridge City may employ some of the new plays that were installed in the offense last week to help mix things up with Lumberton. DeShazo reminded, “Basically, for us it comes down to doing our job, execution, and take care of the football.”
Defensively the Raiders are led by Mason Williams in the front line. Another key returning player for Lumberton is linebacker Zameron Hooks who is the leading tackler for the Raiders.
Friday night is a home game for Bridge City. The Raiders dropped down this season from Class 5A. Lumberton is one of the largest schools in District 11-4A, Division I. The Raiders have won their first two district games, and Bridge City is looking for its first win in district.
DeShazo shared what he hopes to see from the Cardinals against the Raiders. Taking better care of the football is always a must for Bridge City with its ball-control offense. He is optimistic the Cardinals will be able to move the ball better with the wrinkles added last week that the players picked up on quickly. Stopping the run is a must on defense for Bridge City. “For the most part our kicking has been solid, we’ve got to keep that up,” DeShazo concluded.
