The future is now as Mustang freshman Elijah Gales battles for yardage against BC freshman Ethan Oceguera.
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs celebrated Homecoming Friday night and the Bridge City Cardinals weren’t invited to the After Party after a 21-0 shutout.
The game was decided early in the trenches as the Mustangs defensive line won the battle time and again, to the point that BC was having trouble with the hand off.
Following a three and out to start the game, WOS needed just four plays to score after Justin Sibley capped it with a 41 yard TD and a Angel Ibarra kick made it 7-0.
WOS got the ball back right before the first quarter ended. They put together a nine play drive that ended with another Sibley TD, this time from seven yards. The kick gave WOS a 14-0 lead with 11:23 left in the half.
Although it wasn’t raining, a soft field appeared to give both teams trouble as they traded fumbles in both halves, stalling several good drives by WOS.
With 90 seconds left in the first half the Mustangs would go to the air for their third touchdown, a 20 yard pass from Tyrone Wilson to Brettlin Wiley.
At the half, WOS had 183 yards of offense while the Cardinals were held to four yards.
In the second half both teams stayed in the middle of the field except for one WOS drive that started with 3:25 left in the third and ended 18 plays later with 7:23 left in the game and no points as the Cards stopped Wilson on a fourth down play at the two yard line.
Despite the shutout, Coach Cornel Thompson is still looking for two halves of football. “We still haven’t played four quarters yet,” he said.
WOS (2-3) was without RB/LB Kavyn Cooper who is nursing a bad ankle. Sibley had his best game of the season with 162 yards and two TD’s. QB Wilson played the whole game and finished 8-17 for 76 yds. and a TD.
BC (1-4) finished with 42 yards of offense. Coach Allen DeShazo started three freshmen in the game. Oceguera, Deagan King, and Dorian Pruitt all started and played most of the contest. “We have a week off next week and then start district,” he said. “These guys are ready. They’re mature enough to play at the varsity level. But you can’t simulate the speed of the game when you move from Thursday to Friday nights. So we wanted them to experience that before we start district.”
BC will open district in two weeks against Little Cypress-Mauriceville for homecoming. The Mustangs travel to undefeated Jasper on Friday.
