Newton County Commissioner Gene Thompson is counting down the days to move in the new sub courthouse in Deweyville.
The 5400 square foot building is being built on Hwy. 87, just north of the Hwy. 12 intersection. “Higher ground,” Thompson said after the other office received seven feet of water during recent floods.
Sounds like the building will fill up quick according to Thompson. Besides his office (Prec. 4 Commissioner) the Sheriff’s office and Department of Public Safety will have a room, along with Newton County Emergency Management. The Justice of the Peace will have an office and a courtroom. The tax assessors office will have a sub office there along with the state motor vehicle registration. There will even be a library.
The county barn will also be moving into the back of the property.
“We’re hoping for the end of the year,” Thompson said. “But like everything else, it’ll depend on the weather.”
