A gas station off Interstate 10 found a credit card skimmer on a pump Thursday and called Orange police. It was the first skimmer reported in the city in more than a year.
Orange police show the skimmer was found at the Valero station, 7253 Interstate 10 at Highway 62. Thieves secretly put skimmer devices on the credit card-debit card readers at gas pumps. The skimmer sends the numbers on the cards to the crooks, who then use the numbers for illegal purchases without the owner’s knowledge.
The city had numerous reports of skimmers in 2015 through 2016, but none recently. Police advise people to check for anything unusual at the gas pumps. Bankers recommend checking accounts daily and using cell phone apps that notify a customer anytime a card is used.
