(Update: Cox shot 80 on Tuesday and finished tied for 9th)
North Texas Junior Lauren Cox followed up a first-round 69 with a second-round 68 on Monday to put herself in position to win the Minnesota Invitational when play wraps up Tuesday at Prestwick Golf Club.
Cox was the star of the day for UNT, which is currently tied for ninth place with Missouri at 9-over par in the 15-team field.
Cox, who is tied at 7-under par with San Jose State’s Natasha Andrea Oon atop the leaderboard, had 12 birdies on the day — six in each round. San Jose State leads the field on the team leaderboard at 7-under par — one shot up on East Carolina.
“I am very proud of Lauren,” UNT coach Michael Akers said. “She had 12 birdies on the day, which is incredible. Tomorrow is her birthday, so I am hoping she earns a trophy. As a team, we showed some great things and basically our only downfall was taking a high number in Round 1. We are playing against very good programs, so we cannot take high numbers. I am excited for tomorrow and the opportunity to pick up some impressive wins.”
UNT will tee off the third and final round at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, as Cox will look to improve upon her career-best finish of fifth as a freshman.
