A fumble on the opening kickoff by the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears turned in to a quick touchdown and 2-point conversion by the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. And that set the tone for a Mustang 47-0 shutout of the Bears Friday night at Battlin’ Bear Stadium.
WOS (1-1) righted some of the wrongs that they made in their loss to Nederland last week according to Coach Cornel Thompson. That included several changes in the starting lineup.
Jerren “Pop” Terrell got the start at quarterback and the sophomore threw three first half touchdowns, two to Bretlin Wiley as the Mustangs built a 34-0 lead at the half. Terrell finished the game 8-11 for 198 yards.
After missing last weeks game, starting running back Kayvon Cooper rushed for 90 yards on 10 carries. He also had an 85 yard punt return for a score that was called back because of a penalty. Junior Ja’Marcus Ross was also a bright spot. The backup impressed with team high 101 yards on 9 carries with a score.
The Bears were held to just 82 yards of offense with just 10 of that through the air. The Mustangs rolled up 516 yards of offense.
The Bears (0-2) will host Jasper (2-0) next week for Military Appreciation Night. The Mustangs host Newton in one of the most anticipated games of the season. KOGT will broadcast live from Hooks Stadium.
