What has to be considered an upset the West Orange-Stark Mustangs stumbled at home last week to the Nederland Bulldogs. After taking a 12-0 lead the Mustangs lost 19-18. WO-S missed three point-after kicks which proved decisive in the loss.
West Orange-Stark Head Coach Cornel Thompson evaluated the Mustangs’ performance in the game as laying an egg. Their performance was very average and the effort in the tradition of WO-S football was very poor. There will be some new players starting for the Mustangs this Friday night on both offense and defense.
The game was played without running back Kavyn Cooper taking any snaps. Cooper is about 85 percent with an ankle sprain. Thompson said he held Cooper out last week, but he will play this week.
The Mustangs play on the road this Friday night, but it is just down the road as the opponent is their crosstown rival Little Cypress-Mauriceville. Thompson analyzes the Bears’ offense. They use a Spread Offense much like what Nederland used in Week 1.
The LC-M offense starts with sophomore quarterback Ethan McCollum. The big youngster at 205 pounds is a good operator with the football. He is a dangerous runner and can throw it too.
At wide receiver are Darian Williams and James Williams to catch passes from McCollum. Thompson believes WO-S is going to see the Bears’ A-Game this week. “We’re going to get Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s best as we always do,” Thompson predicted.
With Cooper expected to play this week for West Orange-Stark, Coach Thompson tells that the Mustangs can expect a strong effort from LC-M on defense. The Bears operate out of an even front 4-2-5 formation.
The coach is most impressed with the Bears’ two safeties McCollum and Adam Pope who are both over 200 pounds and will pop ball carriers. “They’re going to play their game,” Thompson expressed his concern. “After a loss we go on the road, and it’s going to be very difficult to bring home a victory at Little Cypress this Friday night.”
The rivalry between the two Orange schools may be the headline this week, but Thompson emphasizes an attitude adjustment by the Mustangs is the bottom line for West Orange-Stark. He said the coaches and players have talked about it and discussed it to the finest degree during this week’s practices.
Coach Thompson promised some new faces will start on the defensive side of the football for the Mustangs against Little Cypress-Mauriceville. Another significant change will be on offense as sophomore Jerren “Pop” Terrell will start at quarterback. “Our whole attitude over the game of football has got to change this week,” Thompson concluded.
Tickets for the Mustangs have to be purchased at the LCM gate the evening of the game. Ticket prices are Adults $5 and Students $3.
