Teams always want to get the season started on a good note. Bridge City was plagued by injuries last season, and Head Coach Allen DeShazo believes the Cardinals are ready to start this year with all hands on deck. Two hard-nosed scrimmages have toughened the Cardinals to be ready for the regular season. DeShazo added, “We came out injury free.”
The Cardinals will play the Diboll Lumberjacks to open the season. DeShazo breaks down Diboll’s shotgun offense. The two running backs are explosive. Junior Herbert Gums (6-2, 230) being the best of the Lumberjacks’ runners.
Their talented, athletic wide receivers can go and get the ball. The quarterback Dylan Maskunas makes good decisions. The offensive line is big, strong, and aggressive for sure according to DeShazo.
The Lumberjacks are coached by Blake Morrison, who used to be the head coach at Orangefield and before that was an assistant at Vidor and Little Cypress-Mauriceville. Coach DeShazo is very familiar with Morrison and the defense he uses at Diboll. The Lumberjacks use a 50 defense like Bridge City. Coach Morrison was the defensive coordinator for DeShazo when he was in high school.
Many of the fast and physical players on the Lumberjacks’ offense will also start on defense for Diboll. DeShazo believes Morrison will have them ready to play. “Those guys are going to play hard and it should be tough.”
First games are important in helping teams start the season on the right foot. DeShazo shares the key points he has been stressing with the players to get ready for this opening game with the Lumberjacks. Turnovers as they always are need to be avoided. Bridge City wants to take care of the football and execute the Cardinals’ ball control offense.
Defensively the Cardinals will need to gang tackle the Lumberjack backs and have everybody show up. Playing smart and limiting big plays will be important.
The main thing Coach DeShazo and the Bridge City coaches will be looking for is constant effort out the Cardinals. “Just improvement from the scrimmages,” DeShazo pointed out.
