The City Council met in Bridge City Tuesday evening. The meeting was highlighted by a couple of announcements at the start.
Mayor David Rutledge apologized to the City Council for the way he had conducted their recent meetings dealing with how items get on the agendas for council meetings. He said it was the business of the City Council to discuss the business of the city not public works discussions which is the job of City Manager Jerry Jones. “I strayed from keeping the business of the city in front of us,” Rutledge confessed. During several of the meetings Rutledge had engaged in verbal discourse with citizens on whether the city was allowing them to express their views and opinions.
Council woman Tammi Fissette recognized an honor received by Police Chief Paul Davis last week from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Fisette stated Davis was presented the Director’s Award. Fissette read, “For his work to help the people of Texas during the Hurricane Harvey disaster through the quick action, the caring nature, and unending resources and accommodations provided by the Bridge City Police Department. She added the award to Chief Davis is a reflection on the whole department.
Chief Davis was very humble in his response to the appreciation showed by Fisette and the audience at the meeting. Davis said he was proud to represent the city.
In regular business the City Council approved an ordinance suspending the effective date for an additional 90 days beyond June 19 for the rate increase filed by Entergy Texas. Eric Reeves was approved to serve as an alternate on the Board of Adjustment.
At the recommendation of City Manager Jones, the City Council approved extending sewer service to a property on Nelson Street located in the extra-territorial jurisdiction of Bridge City. Jones informed the council members that the city is planning to extend water and sewer services to that area when funds are available, and this would be just a start to that process.
The Planning and Zoning Commission met in a joint meeting with the City Council prior to the council’s meeting. A public hearing was held to hear comments on the zoning change for two properties on Granger Street on which the owner wants to build duplexes. Another zoning change was open for comments concerning four other properties on Granger to multi-family residential that could also be used to build duplexes.
