Pinehurst is making strides to improve the city’s West Park. Work is continuing to build a walking track around the park. A beach volleyball court should be ready for play in the next week. Two horse shoe pitching pits are being prepared and should be completed soon.
Public Works Director John Toney said some of the other projects at West Park are painting and upgrading the swing sets at the park. The Kiwanis Club has donated a handicap accessible swing that will be installed.
June represents the start of summer and that means more time for children and families to find things to do during the day. The City of Pinehurst is making it possible to go to the beach without even leaving Orange County. Pinehurst has built a beach volleyball court at West Park.
The volleyball court is at the back of the park. Charles Spain with the Public Works Department helped clear the land for the volleyball court. “We leveled out the pad as best as possible for the sand so we’ll have a good thick layer of sand so nobody gets through to the bottom and hurts themselves, it’ll be just like playing on the beach itself,” Spain described.
Eagle Scout Adrian Willingham has completed a Reading Court with Adirondack chairs for parents to use while their children play. Toney explained, “We’re just trying to make it a nice place where people can come out to barbecue and have a good time playing volleyball and horse shoes.” The park opened in 1984 and is located on west Park Avenue in Pinehurst.

This sounds like a wonderful thing that the city of Pinehurst has done for the community. KUDOS to them.
