After 16 years as an assistant, Allen DeShazo is getting his shot. Thursday the Bridge City School Board announced he would be the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, replacing Dwayne Dubois who left to go to back to Hardin-Jefferson with the same title.
DeShazo, a 1998 Vidor grad, came to BC with Dubois from HJ in 2015. But he has worked at BCHS before. He started his career at HJ from 2002-05, then BC from 2005-08. That was followed by a 6 year run at LCM from 2008-13.
Allen’s wife Jamie, is the head girls track coach at BC. The two met during his first stint at BC. They have two sons, ages seven and two.
“Yeh I told her she was going to have to keep up the good work,” her new boss said with a smile. Jamie’s teams have won the last two district track titles.
Deshazo said the team would be sticking with the Slot-T offense that Coach Dubois brought over because the kids have “bought into it.” A few assistants will need to be hired as Dubois took coaches Granger and Humplik with him.
“My main thing is, we want to be tough and we want to be physical,” DeShazo said. He cited that is what it will take to compete in the Cardinals new district for the next two years. BC will compete in 11-4A Division I with LCM, Huffman, Lumberton, Livingston and Splendora.
Coach Dubois didn’t do his former assistant any favors with BC’s non-district schedule. It includes Diboll, West Orange-Stark, Jasper, Silsbee and Anahuac. “It’ll prepare us for district,” he said.
BC Superintendent Todd Lintzen said it was important that they have a head coach in place before the summer break. “We wanted to make sure the off season program and other things we do in the summer started on time. He also has some coaches to hire.”
“Allen was our front runner from the beginning,” Lintzen said. “But we wanted to see what was out there and Allen knew that . We narrowed our search to 12 and interviewed six and he was still our choice so we feel really good about it.”
