Game one of the best of three playoff series went to Lufkin Hudson Thursday evening in Orangefield. The Lady Hornets shutout the Lady Bobcats 4-0 at Paul Cormier Park.
The playoff series is a rematch of last year’s Bi-District round won by Orangefield. The Lady Bobcats could not get any offense going Thursday. Their only baserunner came with two outs in the sixth.
Lufkin Hudson starting pitcher Payton Foster was not dominating, but she was still highly effective. Foster went to three ball counts on only two Lady Bobcats and retired them both. She struck out seven. The only hit was a clean single to center by Kristen Broussard.
Orangefield starter Kaylee Ancelot shutout the Lady Hornets for three innings. In the fourth Lufkin Hudson got a one-out single by Foster who came into the game hitting .481. Graci Fountain sacrificed courtesy runner Hannah Allen to second. Odette Lopez drove in the first run of the game with a double into the right centerfield gap.
Tashia Bell reached on an error with Lopez going to third. Lindsey Mullins made it 2-0 with a grounder that got through the right side for a hit driving in Lopez. An infield single and another error produced a third run giving Lufkin Hudson a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Hornets made it 4-0 in the fifth. Campbell Selman stroked a double off the base of the left field fence to start the inning. She went to second on a long fly to center by Foster. Fountain grounded out to shortstop scoring Selman.
Freshman Codie Sorge relieved Ancelot and pitched the final two innings for Orangefield. Sorge retired six of the seven Lady Hornets she faced with Selman getting a two-out single in the seventh. Sorge also registered the only Lady Bobcat strikeout in the game.
The second game of the series will be Saturday in Lufkin. If a third game is necessary, it would be played following Game Two.
