The Deweyville Lady Pirates brought home the team trophy from Thursday’s Area Meet between Districts 23 & 24-2A. They racked up an impressive 146 points, 31 better than second place than West Sabine. Brooke Smith lead the way, qualifying in all five events she entered which included a first place finish in the Long Jump. Holli Shannon added four medals including an impressive five second win in the 300 hurdles. Her time of 48.1 would’ve also won the 4A Meet.
Pirate Track Coach Hunter Estes said, “This is a good group of girls who push each other to get better each week. They’ve been fun to coach and watch perform.”
The Deweyville boys qualified for Regionals in five events, lead by James Hand who qualified in both hurdle events. A big disappointment for the boys was an injury to pole vaulter Darin Lavergne. After winning the district meet at 13′ he was in a walking boot at the Area Meet after an injury during practice.
Regionals will be next week in Palestine.
