
Veterans Foreign War Post 2775 held its Annual Awards Day ceremony Monday at the VFW Hall on Hwy. 87. Each year the VFW and Auxillary recognizes local first responders and cities with an emphasis on the winners of the Patriots Pen and Voice of Democracy Contests. Presenting the awards was Jr. Vice Commander Kevin Bost. State Representative Dade Phelan was the guest speaker. Over 160 participated in the two contests. The Patriot’s Pen theme was “America’s Gift To My Generation” and winners included: First Madeline Sanderson, MMS 8th; second Paige Brown, MMS 7th; Kaitlyn Ewing, MMS 8th; fourth Peyton McKee, MMS 8th.
The theme for the Voice of Democracy was “My Hope for the Future.” First place went to Lydia Covey who is home schooled. Second, Spender Johns, LCM 12th; third Alora Jones, LCM 12th.
Teaching citations were given to Bernard Perricon LCMHS, Kristin Robinson LCJH and JoAnn Sparacino of St. Mary. The Teacher of the Year is Rhonda Wood. Richard Davis was chosen Fireman of the Year. Steven Block was named EMT of the Year. Bryant Champagne represented OCEDS #1 and the Policeman of the Year was John Badeaux. Also the Scout of the Year was Spencer Johns.
The Auxiliary was honored and they also gave $100 checks to Southeast Texas Hospice and SETX Veterans Burial Group for their community service.
