Dorthy Jean Hill was born August 15, 1932 to the late Porter C. and Addie Cheatham Lewis in Jamestown Newton County, Texas.
Dorthy gave her heart to the Lord and joined the Starlight C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Superintendent Arthur Compton. Under the current Auspices of Senior Pastor E. B. Lindsey, she served faithfully on the Mother’s Board, Pastor’s Aide, Finance Committee, as a Care Team Leader, provided a word of comfort to those in need, and gave heartedly of her time, talent and treasure in the up building of the Kingdom of God.
“Big-Mamma” as she was affectionately known, moved to Orange to provide a stable living for herself and her two baby boys, Eddie Lee & Charles Edward. It was then, in 1956, that she met a straight talking, take no “Bull” young boxer Willie C. Hill. “Bull” as he was so rightly called and Dorthy, quickly became inseparable and married April 15, 1956. To this union were born 5 children…and together they would raise these 7 beautiful children in the admonition and love of the Lord in the historic Lincoln Heights Addition.
Big-Mama loved family, and she was a cook’s cook. It was not uncommon for as many as would and could to stop in and enjoyed the culinary skills of this tall puck wood chopping country girl. It was obvious that Dorthy’s heart was inclined to children. It was not an unusual site to see her with her grandchildren in tow. Her ministry for children extended outside of her home as she was a beloved child care provider for Orange County Action Association that would span 20 years.
Her husband, Willie Charles Hill, two sons, Eddie Lee Johnson and Arthur Hill, grandchild, Ladona Johnson five sisters, Carrie Hawthorne, Jessie Fowler, Trudy Land, Mighty Hawthorne Smith, and Charlene Renfro preceded her in death.
On Wednesday morning, February 21, 2018, God called his faithful servant to eternal rest. She is survived by five children, Greg Hill (Myra) of Spring, TX, Anita Tillman (Theodore) of Arlington, TX, Charlotte Qureshi of Arlington, TX, Bobby Hill (Tracy) of Mansfield, TX and Charles Johnson (Joan) of Orange, TX, 3 sisters, Edna Woods of Fort Worth, TX, Norma Gross (Floyd) of Houston, TX and June Evelyn Dorsey of Los Angeles, CA, a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
