Orange police shot and tazed a charging pit bull Sunday morning in the Brownwood area after the dog had forced a man up a tree. The dog was later euthanized.
Officers went to the 2300 block of Fifth Street at 10:30 in the morning after a 9-1-1 call. They met a man who said the dog had tried to attack him and he climbed a tree. The man has young children and was worried because the dog had been aggressive and tried to bite him.
Officers said they saw the dog when they were talking to the man. Two officers stepped between the man and the dog to allow him to get back inside the house.
They tried to distract the dog and scare it away, however the dog continued barking, showing teeth and go toward them. According to the police report, the officers asked for help from animal control. But as the dog got closer to them, it lunged from three to five feet away. One officer fired three times downward and another fired once.
The dog was shot and ran toward a house on Fourth Street. Other officers used a Taser shock gun to stop it until animal control arrived. The dog was euthanized at the city shelter.
Police said other neighbors told them the dog had been aggressive to other adults and children.
