Orange police Sunday afternoon talked a man in Navy Park from shooting himself. The man stood with a pistol pointed at his head for 45 minutes starting about 2 p.m. He was outside in the area around First and Moreell streets. Police had to keep their weapons aimed on him in case he turned the gun toward officers. The man was coaxed into putting his gun down and was then taken into custody so he could be taken for mental health treatment.
Burglaries were reported at two 16th Street businesses within about 24 hours. Orange police said someone broke into the Donut Hole at 1613 16th Street and later the Valero station at 3900 16th Street.
Employees at the Donut Hole reported the break-in at 2:11 a.m. Friday. Police reported an alarm sounded at the Valero station at 1:35 a.m. Saturday.
An employee at the Valero station showed police the surveillance video and it showed a man using a crowbar to break the glass door. The man grabbed the cash register and ran away.
Police described the man as black and wearing a black jacket with brown sleeves. He also had on a red bandanna, a blue ball cap, along with blue jeans and white tennis shoes.
A car burglary was reported in the Little Cypress area. The owner of the vehicle called Orange police on Friday afternoon to the 2000 block of West Luther Drive off Meeks Drive. The vehicle had been parked in the driveway and someone stole a green wallet with cash and bank cards, along with loose change, a Nintendo switch game and a tanzanite ring.
An apartment burglary was reported Friday evening at the International Apartments off Meeks Drive near Northway Park. Someone got into an apartment and stole several items including a firearm.
Pamela Hinds of Orange was seriously injured Friday afternoon when a large pickup truck hit her Mercedes-Benz. The 59-year-old Hinds was taken by Acadian Air Rescue helicopter to a Beaumont hospital.
The collision was about 2 Friday afternoon on 16th Street at Interstate 10. Orange police said Hinds was driving eastbound in the inside lane of Lutcher Drive, the interstate access road. She had a green light and was turning left to go northbound on 16th Street when she was hit.
Officers reported a Ford F-350 pickup pulling a covered trailer hit the driver’s side of the Mercedes. The truck was southbound on 16th Street in the outside lane when the collision happened.
Police cited the pickup driver, 26-year-old Stephen Wayne Sittig of Hackberry, Louisiana, for failure to yield right of way to the Mercedes.
