Property taxes across Orange County are due on Wednesday. Late-payers will face interest and penalties.
All local taxes are paid to the Orange County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office. The office, under elected official Karen Fisher, bills and collects taxes for 21 different entities in the county. When a property owner pays a check to the office, the money does not all go to the county.
The tax assessor-collector accepts taxes paid to Orange County, plus the port district and the drainage district, along with five public school districts and eight municipalities. In addition, the office collects property taxes for four emergency services districts and one water district.
Payments may be made in person at the County Administration Building in Orange or at the Vidor sub-courthouse. In addition, taxes may be paid by the mail (postmarked by midnight January 31) or online through the tax assessor-collector’s website.
This year, Texas is allowing homeowners who had damage from Hurricane Harvey to pay property taxes in four equal payments. People wanting to use the method need to go by the tax assessor-collector’s office and show they had damage plus they have a homestead exemption. The first payment must be made by the January 31 deadline.
Orange County also allows homeowners age 65 and older to pay in four payments.
Many people pay their property taxes by monthly house payments to standard mortgage companies. The mortgage company keeps an escrow account to pay the taxes.
