
Adele Oglesby Hedges, a Stark High graduate who went on to become a lawyer and Chief Justice of the 14th Texas Court of Appeals, died in Houston Wednesday at the age of 70.
She and her husband, Dan Hedges, who is also a lawyer, were leaders in the Houston law community for many years.
She was born and grew up in Orange. While a student at the old Stark High School, she was drum major of the Tiger Band. She played flute and was selected to the all-state band. In addition she was an honor graduate.
The Houston Chronicle reported she earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Houston in 1968. She enrolled at Rice University in 1972 and earned a master’s degree then a PhD in French literature. After that, she enrolled in law school at the University of Houston Law Center.
She was elected in 1992 to serve on the Texas 1st Court of Appeals. Then-Governor Rick Perry appointed her to serve as Chief Justice of the 14th Court of Appeal when a vacancy opened.
Survivors include her husband and a son.
