Tuesday afternoon representatives from multiple federal agencies met with state, county, and city officials to look at possible sites in Orange County for FEMA mobile home parks. The group first met at the courthouse to discuss the criteria for the future trailer parks in the county.
County Judge Brint Carlton said the Texas General Land Office, the Army Corps of Engineers, and FEMA are surveying areas in the west end of the county and in Orange, Pinehurst, and Bridge City for possible trailer park sites. Carlton and County Commissioner Barry Burton were joined by City Managers Dr. Shawn Oubre of Orange and Jerry Jones of Bridge City as well as other city officials in a drive by tour of the potential sites.
The Army Corps of Engineers has identified four locations as having the accessibility by roadways and access to water and other utilities necessary for the trailer park to be established. The first location looked at during the tour was at Burton Street and Sixth Street which was a former public housing location in Orange. The site is approximately five acres in size and could accommodate up to about 25 FEMA trailers.
The Texas General Land Office indicated there is a need for between 140 to 150 sites to be available for the FEMA trailers. The Corps of Engineers predicted it would take between 75 to 90 days to prepare a site for handling the temporary trailers.
