The father of a toddler learned a lesson about keeping locks above the reach of children. The little girl was found Friday afternoon walking off Highway 87 onto Robin Street in the Greenway Park neighborhood.
After trying unsuccessfully for two hours to find the parents, police called Child Protective Services, who picked up the girl.
Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the father had worked the nightshift and fallen asleep. The little girl managed to unlock the deadbolt and walked out. After the father woke up, he called police about the missing child and was reunited. Enmon said he doesn’t expect charges to be filed.
“He kind of learned a lesson for himself and for all parents,” Enmon said. The father has already raised the door’s deadbolt out of reach of the toddler.
Officer J.L. Goins reported a woman saw the girl, age 2 to 3 years old, walking around barefooted. The child had on a dress with an undershirt, but no long pants. Neighbors started searching for the child’s parents and got her pants and a blanket.
Goins said the little girl had a extensive vocabulary, but was unintelligible on her name. The officer patroled the neighborhood with the child to see if she could point out her house. Finally, she called Child Protective Services.
