Trailing most of the game the Liberty Panthers played a strong fourth quarter to tie the game and then dominated the overtime. Liberty defeated the Orangefield Bobcats 56-48 Friday night in the Bill Tennison Memorial Tournament at Orangefield.
With less than two minutes to play in the third quarter Orangefield’s Zach Dischler made a basket and a free throw to complete a three-point play that gave the Bobcats a 37-25 lead. The Panthers would out score the Bobcats 8-3 in the last 90 seconds of the third.
Liberty kept the momentum on its side scoring the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to take a 44-40 advantage. The Bobcats’ Drew Worthy sank a clutch trey to tie the score 46-46 with 1:53 left in regulation. Orangefield eventually worked for the last shot, but Aven Lathrop’s long three-point shot hit the front of the rim and stayed out.
The Panthers scored first in the overtime on a basket by Heath Brown. Dischler drove the lane and got his layup to fall to bring the Bobcats even at 48-48, but those would be the final points for the Bobcats. Jarius Hill scored the next two buckets before John Turner added the coup de grace with two more field goals from inside the paint.
Hill took high scorer honors with 19 points scoring at least four points in every period except the first when he had two points. Turner also scored in double digits with 14 for Liberty.
Orangefield had three players in double figures. Alex Catt tallied 13 points including 10 free throws. Lathrop finished with 11 points, and Drew Worthy had 10 for the Bobcats.
The victory put Liberty in the championship game of the tournament on Saturday night. Orangefield will play in the Third Place game on Saturday afternoon.
