The Texas Association of Counties gave a positive report Tuesday to the Commissioners Court on the Orange County Jail. The report was provided by Terry Pickering with TAC who is a former sheriff and operated a jail larger than the one in Orange County.
Pickering summarized his report on the jail to the Commissioners. He informed the Court the Orange County Jail was being operated in a very safe manner and was above average of the county jails across the state. Pickering recommended several minor improvements to Sheriff Keith Merritt for the jail
Merritt said he appreciated the advice passed on to him by Pickering and the Texas Association of Counties in operating the jail. Merritt added, “I appreciate their helping us to achieve what we need in Orange County to make the jail an efficient and safe place to operate.”
The Commissioners approved the purchasing agent for the county to go out for bids to purchase a generator for the Mauriceville Municipal Utility District. The generator will assist the utility district to keep the sanitary sewer which serves the Orange County Convention and Expo Center operating in the case of power outage.
The yearly permit report for Phase 2 of the Municipal Separate Sewer System was approved by the Court. The report will now be sent to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Two replacements were selected to serve on the committee to review bids for a Community Development Block Grant. Commissioner John Gothia and Michelle Tubbleville were approved to take the place of Commissioner Barry Burton and Sean Davis on the committee. Burton and Davis work with the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission and it was determined that could be a conflict of interest since money for the project would come from the regional planning commission.
