The West Orange-Stark Mustangs broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to beat the Silsbee Tigers 34-17, spoiling Silsbee’s Homecoming game.
It was the 30th straight win for the two time champs, now 3-0 on the season.
The game started with the Mustangs recovering a Tiger fumble on the opening drive. And on the first play from scrimmage, running back Kavyn Cooper run up the middle and to the end zone for a 62 yd touchdown. The PAT by Chad Dallas was missed.
WOS then kicked to Kalon Barnes, the defending 100 and 200 meter state champ and he showed why with an 89 yd. return for the score. The kick was good and Silsbee had the 7-6 lead.
WOS (3-0) started their next drive on their own 39. Seven plays later on a fourth and five from the Silsbee 21, quarterback Chaka Watson went around the end for the TD. He also ran in the two point conversion to put WOS up 14-7.
On Silsbee’s last play before the half, kicker Eric Martin booted a 46 yard FG to cut the WOS lead to 14-10.
But the Mustangs almost changed that score before the half. With 1.4 seconds left Silsbee pooch kicked to Justin Sibley and he took it down the sideline and into the endzone for an apparent score but the referee said he stepped out at the four.
In the second half, the Tigers took a 17-14 lead with RB Adonis Thomas ran in from 6 yds with 7:10 left in the third. WOS responded on their next drive. After 20 yds in Tiger penalties set WOS up at the Silsbee 43, the Mustangs scored six plays later on a one yd. run by Watson. The PAT was missed and WOS lead 20-17.
WOS holds up four fingers as a sign that the fourth quarter is theirs and they proved it by outscoring Silsbee 14-0. The first score came from Watson from 26 yds. And then, after Silsbee missed a field goal, WOS beat up the clock and the Tigers with a 12 play, 76 yd. drive that took just over 6 minutes. Watson would score his third TD of the game, and go over the 100 yd rushing mark.
RB Cooper finished with 200 yds rushing on 13 carries as the Mustangs rolled up 415 yds of offense to 264 for Silsbee.
WOS travels to Nacogdoches to face state-ranked Kennedale on Friday. KOGT will be there with the play by play.
