A 43-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night in connection with attempting to break into the ATM at First Financial Bank on 16th Street. A motorist driving by called 911 at 11:11 p.m. to report the incident.
The call came as the Orange Police Department, the county SWAT and other agencies were beginning a raid on two suspected drug houses in Roselawn. Detective Captain Robert Enmon said officers had to be sent from the drug raid to the bank.
Albert Don Harper of Orange was arrested for criminal mischief because the building had not been entered. Captain Enmon said Harper is facing a burglary charge from May in connection with breaking a window and getting inside the Chase Bank, 3109 16th Street.
Officer J. Kirkpatrick reported he found a claw hammer and steel rod at a small building attached behind the ATM. The door knob and lock had been knocked off.
He said when he drove up into the bank’s parking lot, he saw a man wearing dark clothing crouched down by the building behind the ATM. The man started walking away. However, he stopped for police.
