UPDATE: Lady Bears win game two on Saturday 12-6. Jenna James was the WP giving up just 5 hits while the Bears had 14 hits. Frenzel and Toomey hit safely three times. Weaver, Short, Leavings and Murdock had 2 hits a piece.
Game one of the best of three bi-district playoff was taken by the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears 3-1 over the Diboll Lady Lumberjacks Friday night in Jasper. Game two and three if necessary will be played Saturday weather permitting.
Lady Bears pitcher Brianna Frenzel pitched brilliantly in the win, her tenth of the season. She retired the first 12 Lady Lumberjacks striking out 10 of them. For the game Frenzel pitched a two-hitter with one walk and 16 strikeouts.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville took the lead in the second inning as Jenna James hit a one-out double to right and scored on a two-out single by JoAnna Henry. The Lady Bears went up 2-0 in the third starting the rally after two were gone. Ashley Short was hit by a pitch. Renna Toomey singled her to second. Short then stole third base and came in to score when the catcher’s throw eluded the third baseman went into left field.
In the bottom of the sixth Olivia Leavings got a leadoff walk. Jacyce Perry beat out a bunt for a single. Henry walked to load the bases. Madison Murdock hit a grounder to third that Diboll threw home to force out Leavings. With Morgan Weaver batting a pitch got away from the catcher and Perry raced home with third Lady Bears’ run.
Diboll got their only run with a leadoff homerun in the seventh inning by Tori Esteves. After another Lady Lumberjack reached on an error, Frenzel ended the drama with her sixteenth and final strikeout of the game.
